Following federal requirements, the draft application is provided for legislative and public review 30 days before submission. This is done with the assistance of an Advisory Committee made up of members who represent a broad range of state, local, and private sector expertise in the criminal justice, social services and public health systems.
Generally, in the spring of each year, Commerce initiates a process to accept concept proposals in anticipation of JAG funding for the new federal fiscal year October 1 to September 30 and to distribute remaining funds from previous fiscal years. Concept proposals are reviewed by the Advisory Committee, resulting in a recommendation to Commerce for funding distribution.
After receiving recommendations from the JAG Advisory Committee, Commerce selects individual projects for funding within the designated program areas based on budget projections.
